A massive blacktail buck, thick-bodied and dark-coated, stands like a ghost of the timber. His chest is deep, neck swollen from the rut, and his hide carries that charcoal-gray tone that old coastal blacktails are known for. Heavy beams rise from his skull, wide and gnarly, with deep forks and blunted tips worn from years of fighting and slipping through brush. One ear is nicked, his face scarred and gray around the eyes—clear signs of age and survival. He doesn’t move like a nervous deer; he pauses, listens, and melts back into the shadows, the kind of buck that proves why blacktails are considered one of the toughest and most elusive deer in North America.
