A mature whitetail buck slips through the river bottom at first light, his gray-brown coat blending into the cottonwoods and tangled willow thickets. Frost clings to the sedges along the bank as he steps silently into the shallow current, muscles rolling beneath his hide while the water parts around his chest. Steam rises in the cold air, and droplets cling to his heavy antlers as he climbs the far shore. In the hush of the bottomland—broken only by the soft rush of water and distant crows—he disappears into the timber like a ghost of the floodplain.
